Using Hanging Room Dividers
As an interior designer I have really come to understand the importance of hanging room dividers when working with large open spaces that need to be broken up into segments. Hanging room dividers are great for studio apartments an other similar layouts because you can segment an area of the space and create a physical barrier there with little effort.
Once of my favorite hanging room dividers styles is the bamboo version. I used this in a project for a small condo in Utah. They had a bathroom that was open to the area for the sink and laundry room, but there was not enough room to actually have a full fledged door installed. The solution I came up with was to put up some bamboo hanging room dividers that would keep that area separate and it wouldn’t be such an eye sore when sitting in the living room with guests.
The Different Types of Hanging Room Dividers
There are many different styles of hanging room dividers. I use cloth, plastic, and beaded hanging room dividers for most of my projects that require them. Last year I got a chance to do some interior designing for a small shoe store boutique in the Provo Towne Centre mall. I was able to incorporate all three different types of hanging room dividers and it really helped to bring the whole concept together. I used the beaded dividers in the from area behind the window displays and signage and this helped to cover the backside of the display. I then used a cloth hanging room divider between two shoe displays to add a dramatic segmentation to the display. I then used a plastic divider in the back room to help segment then different areas where the various shoes are stored. It was great to see how well it turned out and I use that store as an example in portfolio all the time.
Another great part about hanging room dividers is that they offer a temporary solution that can easily be taken down when the time comes. This can be helpful for those people that may simply be renting a space and not have the ability to do any major renovations.
Making a Hanging Room Divider
Much of the time, I dont actualy purchase handing room dividers when I am in need to a good cloth version. They are just as easy to make and it will actually save you a little money if you decide to go that route. The first step is to head to the local fabric store to pick out a fabric that will work with the design of the room. Depending on the wall color I normally pick a spunky design or pattern to spice things up a little. I have found that it is wise to stay away from solid colors, unless the room is already vibrant with patterns.
After purchasing the fabric, I purchase two wooden dowels from the home improvement store and these get sewn onto the top and the bottom of the cloth. Then it is easy to tie a string to each end and hang it from the ceiling. I prefer using fishing line as the string because it is hard to see and offers a more attractive finished product. Making your very own hanging room dividers really doesn’t need to be complicated.
